About the Trout PDF  | Print |  E-mail
1aThe trout in the Cumberland River tail waters are outstanding, both in quantity and quality! The river received its first stocking of trout in 1956, but stocking was irregular for a few years. Starting in 1961, rainbows were stocked annually; then in 1982, browns were stocked annually and both programs continue to the present.

The size range varies, but average trout are in the 12 to 15 inch range, and most of them have good "shoulders"! The possibility of Trophy trout is ever present, with fish common in the 16 to 20 inch range, and good numbers over 20 inches! The Cumberland tail waters is managed as a trophy brown trout fishery, with a minimum size limit of 20 inches and a creel limit of 1 per day. There is also a slot limit, where no trout between 15 and 20 inches may be kept. This means returning a lot of good fish back to the river to be caught again another day!

Trout on the Cumberland RiverThe Kentucky state records for both rainbows and browns were caught from the Cumberland River tail waters. The record rainbow is 14 lbs 6 oz., and the record brown is 21 lbs.! The possibilities are here; with a river full of trout, including plenty of big ones, and a scenic backdrop of nature's beauty to enjoy all day while fishing.
